I had always been a dedicated and loyal employee, and I thought I had a good relationship with Greg, my boss. He was strict, but fair. Demanding, but he listened.
Years passed, I worked hard, put in overtime to prove my worth. I thought I had earned my place in the company.
When Greg called me to his office one afternoon, I thought it was just a routine meeting.
But that day changed my life.
— Lena, — he started without looking me in the eye, — I’m sorry, but we have to let you go.
For a moment, my mind went completely blank.
— What? Why? — I stammered, confused and in disbelief.
— I’m sorry, Lena. There’s simply no more budget for your position, — he explained, avoiding my gaze. — Nothing personal, it’s just business. You’ll get severance pay, HR will explain the details.
I couldn’t grasp what he was saying. How could everything have changed so suddenly? I had just finished an important project, received excellent reviews, and had given my best for the team. There was no warning, no sign that my job was in jeopardy.

— Are you sure? — I asked with a trembling voice. — I’ve worked so hard for this company. Why now?
Greg sighed, clearly uncomfortable.
— It’s not my decision, Lena. It’s the company’s decision. I’m sorry, but I can’t do anything.
I packed up my things, my head spinning. As I left his office for the last time, I tried to suppress the feeling of betrayal, but it was too strong. I had given everything to this job, and now I had nothing left.
The next morning, I woke up to a message that froze my blood.
“Meet me. I need to tell you the truth. — Sarah.”
The message was from Sarah, Greg’s wife. I hadn’t spoken to her in years, and I didn’t even know she had my number.
My heart began to race. What could she want? Why had she contacted me now, after all this?
Hesitant, but in the end, I agreed to the meeting. Maybe there was something I needed to know that had been hidden.
We met at a small café downtown. When I arrived, Sarah was already sitting at a table, hands clasped together. She had changed — looking older, more tired — but her gaze radiated an unusual intensity.
— Lena, — she spoke quietly, seriously. — Thank you for coming. I know this is strange.
I nodded, not knowing what to say.
— Why did you want to see me? What happened?
Sarah took a deep breath, glanced at the window for a moment, then looked back at me.
— I don’t know how to say this… but I think you have the right to know the truth. Greg didn’t fire you because of the budget, Lena. That was a lie.
I looked up, stunned, staring at her.
— What do you mean? He said the company didn’t have money.
Sarah pressed her lips together, her voice trembling.
— That’s not it, — she confessed. — He fired you because of me.
I blinked, trying to process.
— Because of you? What do you mean?
Guilt reflected in her eyes.
— Greg and I… our marriage has been falling apart for months. We fought constantly, and he… — Sarah hesitated, then lowered her gaze. — He had an affair.
My heart stopped.

— Greg cheated on you?
She nodded, tears glistening in her eyes.
— Yes. But not with just anyone. With you.
It felt like being punched in the gut. I could hardly breathe.
— What? I—
— I know, — she interrupted me, wiping away a tear. — But Greg thought it was true. He was obsessed with you, Lena. He had wanted you for months. He had tried to fire you earlier but couldn’t. That’s why he’s been distant lately, that’s why he hasn’t talked to you at meetings. He tried to distance himself from you, to convince himself that he felt nothing.
It felt like the world was falling apart around me.
— And it didn’t work, — Sarah continued. — The night before your firing, we had a huge fight. I figured everything out, and he confessed. I told him I couldn’t go on like this, and he had to choose between me and you. So he fired you. He thought that if you disappeared, he could save our marriage.
I sat there in complete shock. In my worst nightmares, I never would have imagined this.
— I’m so sorry, Lena, — Sarah said sincerely. — I didn’t want you to be dragged into this. I didn’t know how to fix it, but I didn’t want you to pay for Greg’s mistakes. I just wanted you to know the truth.
I couldn’t process it. My thoughts were spinning, my heart was heavy.
— I don’t know what to say, — I whispered finally.
Sarah took my hand.

— I’m not expecting you to forgive. I just wanted you to know it’s not your fault.
I nodded slowly, still in shock.
— Thank you for telling me. I don’t know what I’ll do now, but at least I know the truth.
Sarah smiled sadly.
— Take care of yourself, Lena. I hope you find peace in this chaos.
As I left the café, I felt the weight of the truth pressing down on my shoulders.
My career, my trust in Greg, my self-image — everything was in ruins.
But at least I knew the truth.
And the truth, painful as it was, was the first step in rebuilding my life.
