My son said he didn’t want to see me at his wedding, but I went anyway and got revenge on everyone.

LIFE STORIES

Marina watched her son try on his new suit. Tall, slender, dark-haired … tomorrow his life would change. He was getting married, and it was hard to believe.

— A very elegant outfit, he remarked, admiring himself in the mirror. The color is beautiful and it looks expensive.

“It is,” thought Marina, but she said simply:

— I’m glad you like it. I’ll probably cry when I see you in your ceremonial clothes.

Ilia finally tore his eyes away from his reflection and turned to his mother.

— Mom, are you planning to come to the wedding? We agreed that you wouldn’t come.

Marina froze, not immediately grasping the meaning of his words.

— Agreed? she repeated, trying to remember. I thought you were joking.

— It wasn’t a joke, Ilia replied irritably. Have you forgotten who Vika’s parents are? Mom, do you want to ruin this important day?

He sat next to her, took her hand, and squeezed it gently.

— Mom, just imagine how miserable you’ll look next to all those sophisticated women. I won’t be able to fully enjoy this day. The day after, we’ll come to your house and celebrate together.

Marina felt a pain clutch her chest. Her own son was ashamed of her.

— Why would I look miserable? she protested faintly. I’ve booked an appointment with a good hairstylist, I’ll get a manicure. I have a dress…

— What dress? That old blue thing? Ilia shouted. Don’t you understand? I don’t want to see you at the wedding.

He grabbed his backpack and headed for the door, then turned back.

— I’ll say it one last time: don’t come. No one will be happy to see you.

Marina didn’t try to stop him.

The next day, as the newlyweds stood before the altar, a soft sound echoed through the church. The guests turned: Marina was standing in the doorway.

But this wasn’t the Marina Ilia knew. She looked elegant, with perfect hair, discreet makeup, and a dress that flattered her figure.

The guests exchanged glances, and some whispered. Someone quietly asked Vika:

— What an elegant woman… Is that your mother‑in‑law?

Ilia went pale.

Marina stepped forward, looked at her son, then at the bride.

— Excuse me for the intrusion, she said calmly. I just wanted to greet my future daughter‑in‑law in person.

She pulled a small velvet box from her bag and handed it to Vika. Surprised, Vika accepted the gift.

— I wish you all the happiness in the world, Marina continued, looking at her son. I hope she teaches you what I never could.

Then she turned on her heel and left the church with her head held high.

Ilia stood frozen, unable to speak. He had just realized he’d made a mistake that would change their relationship forever.
