Bride Refuses to Change Wedding Time for Sister’s Toddler’s Nap and Stands Her Ground

LIFE STORIES

When two people set boundaries, conflict can arise. In today’s story, a woman refused to give in to her stubborn sister. She had a good reason—she was getting married.

The couple decided to marry in the fall.

My fiancé and I are getting married this October. We’re excited since we got engaged in January. We’re planning a small, intimate wedding with only close family and friends.

My sister Lisa is at the heart of the issue. Lisa and her husband have a two-year-old son. I can’t list all the reasons why Lisa and I don’t have the warmest relationship.

The wedding invitations went out last month. We asked guests to arrive at 1:00 PM, as the ceremony starts at 1:30 PM. Since the venue is near our hometown, Lisa and most others shouldn’t have trouble arriving on time.

However, Lisa told me that the timing wouldn’t work for her because of her son’s nap. She said he naps at noon and she didn’t want to wake him up just to attend, since he’d be cranky. I don’t have kids myself, but this seemed like a weak excuse.

Lisa said she couldn’t get a babysitter because all the people she trusts will be attending the wedding. She then said she wouldn’t come unless we changed the time. I suggested she at least come to the reception.

She refused again. I told her the time couldn’t be changed. She responded that she wouldn’t be coming. That hurt me deeply. I ended the call with an excuse because I didn’t know what else to say.

A few days later, Lisa asked what I thought about her request. I reminded her we couldn’t change the time. She said she hoped I’d be happy she wasn’t coming, that everyone would wonder where she was, and that it was all because she couldn’t bring her child. I angrily told her the world doesn’t revolve around her and her kid. She called me a “Bridezilla” and blocked me.

I don’t see why I should apologize, even though my mother keeps insisting I should.
