My daughter first became fascinated with it when she was fascinated by it. Our neighbors had a real horse at home. For a little girl, it was a real miracle: she could spend hours next to this big, calm animal.

This went on for months. Our daughter was increasingly attracted to the horse, and the neighbor’s pet reciprocated. But one day, our neighbor knocked on our door. He seemed unusually serious.

“We need to talk,” he said as soon as he walked in.
