My mother-in-law arrived always with his whole tribe to take advantage of barbecues for free with us — so when they are still arriving with empty hands the 5th of July, I gave them a lesson instead
My mother-in-law was in the habit of considering our house as a center of free barbecue. At every opportunity, she landed with her whole family without ever bringing anything or participate. Then, when they arrived, once again, empty-handed for the 5th of July, I decided that it was time to serve something other than ribs grilled.
I was married to my husband for seven years. We had two children and a peaceful home in the country, which had become, in a certain way, the favorite place of my mother-in-law Juliet to invite as soon as a party was approaching.
She never came alone. She brought her daughters, their children, and an incredible amount of chutzpah that was enough to fill an entire aisle.
Each visit is like. Juliet arrived at us as if she was the owner. She moved the furniture, criticised my kitchen, gave advice that nobody asked him and acted as if my house was only for his comfort.
We were not stingy people. We love to receive our family. But to get didn’t mean to pay for all of the world, cooking for everyone, clean up after everyone, and then be treated as a domestic.
They were never food. Did ever of money. There was never a hand to stow. They said just thank you. They came just to eat, clutter, complain, and then off again.
Then Juliette has even called.
— Annie, my dear, we all come for the 14th of July, she said with a tone of joy. The whole family will be there. We will stay the whole weekend.
This was the time when I’ve reached my limit.
Friday afternoon came as a party imposed, that I never requested.
Three cars were entered in our driveway, and the same troop habitual is output : Juliette with a huge sun hat, his two daughters, wearing nothing than their designer bags, and six children, who were immediately transformed my lawn in the field of battle.
— Annie ! exclaimed Juliette hugging me, with a smell of perfume out of price and insurance disproportionate. I hope that everything is ready. We are dying of hunger !
— Almost ready, ” I replied, with a smile so sweet that he would be able to fool anyone.
But this time, things would be different.
(Continued in the first comment )

And it is at this point that my plan has started.
Friday afternoon arrived with three cars in the driveway… and no shopping bag.
Juliet went down to the first, wearing a huge sun hat and the expression of someone who was expecting a full service. Sarah and Kate followed, their designer bags to hand, but nothing else. The six children rushed out on the lawn as if someone had just opened the door to a zoo.
— Annie ! exclaimed Juliette, drawing me in for a hug full of fragrance. I hope that everything is ready. We are dying of hunger.
— Almost ready, ” I replied with enthusiasm.
The picnic table was beautiful. I had installed jars filled with wild flowers for my garden, folded cloth napkins and prepared a pitcher of fresh lemonade, which shone in the sun of the afternoon. One would have said a scene release of a magazine.
Sarah sat up and smiled.
— You manage to always make things so pretty.
Kate looked around her.
— Where is the food ?
— She’s coming right away, ” I replied.
I went into the kitchen and came back with my masterpiece.
Tea sandwiches cucumber.
The scabs had been removed. The slices were cut into small triangles perfectly regular. Next was a teapot of black tea, warm.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Juliet stared at the tray as if I’d just ask a tax invoice in front of her.
— Annie, ” she said slowly… where is the barbecue ?
I bent my head slightly with a smile.
— Oh, I haven’t done the races this time. Like everyone in the world adores so our grills, I told myself that you surely want to make the meat yourself.
The silence that followed was beautiful.
Sarah opened her mouth. Kate stood frozen. Juliette blinked as if his brain had just crash.
— There’s a butcher around fifteen minutes from here, on Riverview Road, continued-I joyfully. It closes in 18 hours. The barbecue is ready, and there’s coal-nine in the shed.
The face of Juliet tensed up.
— But you invited us, ” she said.
— Actually, ” I replied calmly, it is you who are invited.
The children began immediately to protest.
— Where are the hot dogs ? asked Tyler.
Me, I want burgers ! shouted Madison.
Connor, three years, pushed her sandwich from the tip of the finger, and said :
— It has the taste of the plants.
Juliet stood up so abruptly that his chair, cleared his terrace.
— This is incredibly rude, Annie. We are a family.
— Precisely, ” I replied. And a family, mutual assistance. We have organized all the holidays for four years. I told myself that it was time that everyone participates.
Sarah and Kate looked at each other as if I had committed a crime.
Bryan, who had remained silent near the door of the kitchen, eventually, move on.
— The market of meat Morrison has an excellent selection, ” he said. I can give you the address, or we can all go there together.
Juliette turned to him.
— I can’t believe that you are supporting it selfishness.
The voice of Bryan remained calm.
— I support my wife.
At this moment, I liked most that I couldn’t explain it.
They departed less than an hour later, but not before Juliette launches a last sentence dramatic.
— You have returned my son against his own family, ” she whispered while the children disappointed rode in cars. I hope you’re happy.
I begin, ” I replied, by making them sign as they left the driveway in a cloud of dust and wounded pride.
The next morning, I woke up with seventeen missed calls and a publication Facebook that would almost make me explode of anger.
Juliette had written a long post filled with emotion about his “daughter-in-law without a heart,” which would have ” ruined the 14th of July of the poor innocent children.” She claimed that I had refused to feed them, mounted Bryan against his family and been cruel after all “love and joy” that they had made.
But it was the error of Juliet.
She had forgotten one thing : I keep evidence of it.
I don’t disputai with it. I don insultai not. I don publiai no answer furious.
Instead, I gathered up the photos of all the grills that we had organised over the years. Tables filled with food. Juliette smiling with a plate in his hands. Sarah and Kate laughing next to platters of ribs, grilled burgers, sausages, salads, potatoes, fruits and desserts. Kids eating happily in my garden.

Then I took a photo of the receipt.
Part 3 :
Hundreds of thousands of dollars. Dated. Classified. Indisputable.
I publiai photos with a single legend :
“I share just a few of the beautiful memories from all our family moments. So grateful for the wonderful memories that we have created together. ”
It was everything.
No charges. No cry. Only on the evidence.
The Internet immediately understood.
The comments began to appear in my publication.
People wondering why a family, so-called “loving” never seemed to bring nothing. Others were telling their own stories of loved ones who treated them as caterers for free. Several emphasized that the sandwiches cucumber remained in spite of all of the food, which made the affirmation of Juliet in which I had “refused to feed them” totally false.
In two days, the publication’s dramatic Juliet disappeared.
No excuses. No explanations. Just removed.
And for the first time in years, my house was quiet for a weekend of celebration.
Sometimes, the most powerful message is not the one that cries.
Sometimes it is served on a platter, with the crusts carefully removed.
And sometimes, when some people continue to take advantage of your kindness, the best thing that you can offer them is exactly what they have brought to the table.
Nothing.
