My wife told me to leave and leave our daughter for a few weeks—when I understood why, I was speechless.

LIFE STORIES

When my wife asked me to leave the house for several weeks—leaving our three‑year‑old daughter behind—I was completely bewildered. I had no idea that her request hid a far more shocking truth.

My name is Alexei, I’m 32, and my world revolves around my daughter Ana. At three years old, she brightens every day. She’s my little princess, always ready to hear a story, play, or share dinner. My wife Marina seemed indifferent.

Each morning, Ana would wake up calling “Daddy,” and I’d scoop her into my arms before making her animal‑shaped pancakes. Then off to the park: swings and laughter until she’d shout, “Higher, Daddy!”

In the afternoon, we built blanket forts. “We’re in a castle, Daddy! You’re my knight,” she’d declare, brandishing her makeshift sword.

One day, Marina confessed she felt left out. I suggested mother‑child workshops, but she snapped them down with irritation.

That evening, after tucking Ana in, Marina said, “Alexei, you need to leave for a few weeks.” I thought it was a joke, but her seriousness was clear. “Ana needs to get closer to me,” she insisted.

I was furious. “You want to kick me out?” She shot back, “I’m her mother!” In those words I heard selfishness.

After hours of arguing, we agreed: I would stay with a friend for one week. My heart broke.

The nights were long. Ana would call, “Daddy, will you come back soon?” I’d answer, “Yes, sweetheart, I have to help your uncle Andrei.”

On the fifth day, I couldn’t bear it any longer. I went to see her with her favorite toy. As I arrived, I heard laughter—but it wasn’t hers. Marina was on the couch with her colleague Dmitri.

Her attempts to explain failed. Her request had nothing to do with Ana.

I left, hurt but determined. Ana is and will remain my priority. We divorced, but I stayed by her side. Looking into her trusting eyes, I knew I would never let her down.
