My new neighbor had been secretly burying eggs along the edge of my yard before sunrise. At first, I thought it was some ridiculous prank. But when my security camera finally caught what she did with the fourth egg, the strange feeling in my stomach turned into pure fear.
When Melissa and her husband moved in next door, they seemed completely ordinary. Friendly, polite—nothing about them seemed suspicious.
A week later, Melissa asked if I would agree to replace the old wooden fence between our properties.

“We’ll pay for it,” she said with a smile. “It’s practically falling apart anyway.”
She was right, so I agreed.
The old fence came down Monday. The contractor said the new one wouldn’t be installed until Friday.
Tuesday morning, I noticed freshly disturbed soil where the fence had stood. My curiosity got the better of me, and I pushed the dirt aside with my shoe.
There was a white egg buried underneath.
It was bizarre, but I convinced myself some neighborhood kid was playing a stupid prank.
Then Wednesday, another egg appeared.
Thursday brought a third.
That’s when the uneasiness really began.
Each egg had been carefully buried in its own tiny hole, all of them almost perfectly spaced along the old fence line.
This wasn’t random.
Someone was doing it on purpose.
I mentioned the eggs to Melissa that afternoon. Her expression changed for just a second before she quietly said, “Eggs? That’s weird.”
Something about her reaction made my skin crawl.
That night, I changed my security camera settings to alert me if anyone entered that side of my yard.
At exactly 5:12 a.m., my phone suddenly buzzed.
Motion detected.
I opened the live feed—and froze.
Melissa was standing in my yard, wearing nothing but a robe and slippers.
In her hand was a fourth egg.
I watched in silence as she slowly walked toward the same stretch of ground.
I expected her to bury it like the others.
She didn’t.
What she did next made my eyes widen in horror.
I grabbed my flashlight, ran outside, and shouted,
“Melissa, what the hell are you doing?!”

Melissa spun around, and the color drained from her face.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she looked at the egg in her hand and whispered, “You weren’t supposed to see this.”
My heart started pounding.
“What are you doing in my yard?” I demanded.
She slowly lowered the egg into the dirt, but instead of burying it, she cracked it against a flat stone.
I stared in disbelief.
There was no yolk.
Inside was a tiny black object wrapped in clear plastic.
Melissa pulled it out with trembling fingers.
“It’s a tracker,” she said. “But not for you.”
Before I could ask what she meant, she pointed toward the empty space where the old fence had been.
“Look underneath the ground.”
I grabbed the flashlight and began digging.
Within seconds, my shovel struck something hard.
It was a small metal box.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
My photographs.
Pictures of me leaving for work. Coming home. Sitting on my porch. Even sleeping with the bedroom curtains open.
My hands began to shake.
“How long?” I whispered.
Melissa swallowed hard.
“Almost three months.”
I looked at her, completely confused.
“Then why were you burying those eggs?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because the person watching you was using the old fence to hide cameras. I found them after we moved in.”
She pointed toward the fourth egg.
“I wasn’t planting something.”
“I was trying to find where the signal was coming from.”
Suddenly, my security camera flashed.
Motion detected.
We both turned toward the house.
Someone was standing behind my bedroom window.
Watching us.
Then the figure slowly raised one hand and waved.
