The ice crackled loudly beneath him, the water was so cold that it almost took his breath away. People on the shore began to scream — some were already calling for an ambulance, others were filming, and still others were just standing there, unable to believe that this was really happening before their eyes.
The puppy was desperately struggling, trying to stay afloat. His eyes were full of panic. He barely had any strength left.
The man moved forward slowly, breaking the ice with his hands. Each meter took a huge effort. The ice cut into his skin, the water pulled him down, but he didn’t stop.
“Hold on, little one… hold on…” he repeated hoarsely, as if the dog understood.

Finally, he reached the puppy. It was barely floating in the water. The man grabbed it, held it close, and tried to turn back.
But at that moment, the ice beneath it completely cracked.
They both disappeared under the water.
A scream was heard from the shore.
The seconds seemed like an eternity.
Then suddenly — a splash.
The man emerged, gasping for air, still hugging the puppy tightly. His lips were blue, his movements were heavy. People were already running towards them with sticks and scarves, someone lay down on the ice and stretched out his hand.
— Here! Come on! A little more! — they shouted.
First they pulled the dog out. Its small body was shaking, but it was alive. Someone immediately wrapped it in a coat.
Then they pulled the man out too.
It didn’t move.
They laid him on the ground. Someone started CPR, others shouted for something warm, someone was crying.
The puppy, barely standing on its feet, freed itself and crawled over to the man. It whined softly and pressed its nose to his cheek, as if begging him to wake up.
— Come on… please… — a woman whispered next to him.
And suddenly the man took a deep breath.
Coughing, water, gasping — but he opened his eyes.
The crowd sighed with relief.
The puppy began to whine with joy and lick his cheek.
The man smiled hard.
— You’re alive… — he whispered, looking at the dog.
Later it turned out that the puppy had run away from its owners and ended up at the lake alone. They were never found.
And the man… he was alone too.
A week later, they were seen together again in the same park.
The puppy, now in a warm red collar, ran happily beside him, wagging its tail.
And the man no longer seemed lonely.
Sometimes, to save someone, you have to risk your own life.
But sometimes — at that very moment, you find someone who saves you.
