The marine worm Eulagisca gigantea has recently gone viral online due to its bizarre appearance. This 20 cm long worm, found in the icy waters of Antarctica, has shimmering golden bristles and a gaping, tooth-lined mouth, making it look like a creature from a science fiction horror film.

What makes it special? The worm has a retractable throat that extends to reveal sharp teeth, which it uses to feed on carrion or hunt smaller marine organisms. Its golden bristles may help it swim, crawl, or defend itself. Although it was discovered in 1939, scientists have only briefly studied it so far.

Eulagisca gigantea is a polychaete, a type of marine worm that inhabits various ocean environments. While over 8,000 species are known, experts believe many more remain undiscovered.

A recent viral Facebook post about this strange creature has sparked both fascination and fear. Even though it seems alien, such creatures help scientists explore the biodiversity of the deep sea. With much of the ocean still unexplored, time will tell what other bizarre life forms will be discovered.
