The world’s oldest mother gave birth to twins at the age of 66, and her own family called her selfish

LIFE STORIES

Becoming a mother is truly a unique and special responsibility—literally as old as our species.

Motherhood is a life-changing experience that sometimes arrives as a surprise, and at other times is the result of years of patient waiting. However it happens, we can all agree on one thing: it is always a blessing.

In most cases, none of us can predict when we will become parents. We can do our best to make it happen—if that is what we want—but life will always remain unpredictable. Some women become mothers while still teenagers, bringing new life into the world at a young age. Others conceive later in life. And sadly, some face challenges that prevent them from ever having a biological child.

Of course, there is no right or wrong way to do it. Every baby deserves to be celebrated, just as every mother deserves recognition for the incredible journey she undergoes, physically and emotionally, to bring a human being into the world.

However, some women—like Maria Carmen del Bousada from Cádiz, Spain—face judgment and even condemnation for their decisions regarding motherhood. According to reports, Maria, a retired shop worker, sold her house to afford IVF treatment that allowed her to become pregnant despite her advanced age. Allegedly, she lied to doctors at a fertility clinic in California, claiming she was 55 years old. Maria stated that everyone has the right to decide when to start a family rather than being pressured by societal expectations.

According to The Guardian, she said at the time: “Often, circumstances force you to stand between a rock and a hard place, and maybe it shouldn’t have happened this way, but it was the only way to achieve what I had always dreamed of.” Naturally, not everyone agreed with her.

She received the harshest criticism from her own family, who called her selfish. Maria admitted to hiding her pregnancy for a time and said her relatives thought she was joking when she told them. In 2006, Maria gave birth to healthy twin boys, Christian and Pau, becoming the oldest mother in the world.
