I posted a swimsuit photo, and my daughter-in-law called me old and wrinkled — I had no choice but to teach her a lesson.

LIFE STORIES

A week ago my husband and I returned from our long-awaited vacation. It was our first trip alone together, without the grandchildren. We’re both over 60, but by the sea we felt young again.

Every morning the alarm wasn’t set for 7 a.m., like at home, but for 9. We ate fresh seafood, enjoyed walks on the immaculate beach, and held hands like newlyweds.

One day I was wearing a white bikini and my husband kept showering me with compliments. Suddenly a little girl came up to us, pulled out her phone, and took a photo of us embracing in front of the ocean.

Back home I posted that picture on Facebook. The comments were warm — “You’re wonderful!”, “True love!” — but one came from my daughter-in-law.

She wrote: “How can she show her wrinkled body in a swimsuit? And kissing her husband at her age is disgusting. Honestly, she’s awful, lol!”

I read her comment over and over, not believing my eyes. She soon deleted it, but I had already taken a screenshot.

I’m not the type to suffer injustice in silence. I decided to teach my daughter-in-law a lesson.

So I had the idea to organize a family barbecue.

“Donald,” I said to my husband, “we need to get the whole family together.” He nodded and started drafting the invitation in our group chat.

That weekend the whole family gathered, except Janis, who—predictably—was late. I waited for her patiently.

When she finally arrived I took out my phone and said:

“I want to share a special moment from our vacation.” I showed the photo: Donald and me, wrapped in each other’s arms on the beach.

An admiring “Oh!” went around the room.

“This photo proves that love does not disappear with age,” I continued, letting everyone take it in. “But unfortunately, not everyone shares that view.”

I opened the screenshot of Janis’s comment and turned the screen toward the guests. Silence fell over the room.

“Someone in this room thought it was okay to mock love, age, and wrinkles,” I said without taking my eyes off Janis.

She went pale and her gaze darted around the room. Her lips trembled.

“Janis, one day you will grow old too. I sincerely hope that when that day comes, someone will be by your side who loves you as much as Donald loves me. And that no one will ever shame you for your body.”

I smiled and raised my glass. “To love, to life, to the courage to be yourself at any age!”

The guests supported me by raising their glasses.
