A woman gives a poor boy the leftover food from her restaurant — until one day she decides to follow him.

LIFE STORIES

Alice had a feeling that the boy who often came to collect leftovers from her restaurant was hiding something, so one day, she decided to follow him. But what she discovered along the way amazed her.

“You’re lucky today, kid. We have a lot of leftovers—you can take them home,” said Steve. He was the chef at Alice’s restaurant and often saved food for Christopher, a young boy who regularly came by for food.

“Really? Is there so much food? Enough to share with my friends?” Christopher’s eyes lit up.

“Yes, Chris,” Steve answered with a big smile. “Wait here, I’ll bring you the bags.”

Christopher was thrilled and thanked Steve with a huge grin before happily walking away.

Alice had no idea this was a regular thing until she saw Christopher leaving one day. She wasn’t sure if he was only eating the food or something else was going on. “I need to find out what’s going on with this boy. He doesn’t look homeless,” she thought.

Over the next few days, she waited for his return, and on the third day, when he came back, she greeted him kindly: “Hi there. Here for the leftovers?”

“Yes!” Chris replied happily. “Can you call the chef? He was supposed to leave the bags for me.”

Alice smiled warmly. “You don’t have to wait. I’ve made fresh food for you—no need for leftovers. By the way, what’s your name?”

“That’s very kind, thank you,” said Christopher. “My full name is Christopher, but you can call me Chris.”

“Why don’t you eat at home, Chris? Is your mother sick?”

Christopher’s expression changed. “Well… I live in a shelter, and they don’t feed us well. Your staff helps me every time. I’m really grateful. But I have to go now,” he said and ran off.

Alice suspected he was hiding something. That day, she decided to follow him. What she saw shocked her.

Instead of going to a shelter, Chris entered a house, left the food on the porch, and left. An elderly woman came out, surprised, took the bag, and returned inside.

Alice was about to knock on the door when she got an urgent call from the restaurant and had to leave.

The next day, when Chris returned, she confronted him gently: “You have to explain something, Chris. I know the food wasn’t for you. Who was it for?”

“I’m sorry I lied,” Chris admitted. “I take the food to my grandmother. She’s my only family.”

Alice was stunned. “Then why are you living in a shelter?”

“When my parents died, my grandma wasn’t given custody due to financial issues. She can’t afford food, so I bring it to her.”

Alice was moved. That same day, she visited his grandmother, Edith, who was shocked to learn it was her grandson leaving the food.

“That’s really my grandson?” Edith cried. “I miss him so much. I’m sorry I couldn’t help.”

“Don’t worry,” Alice reassured her. “I can help both of you.”

She applied for guardianship of Chris and, after quick approval, brought him back home to his grandmother.

“I don’t know how to thank you, Alice,” Edith said. “I always wanted to be near my grandson.”

“You don’t have to thank me,” Alice replied. “I lost my parents early too. I know how important family is.”

Edith held Alice’s hands. “You’re like family to us now.”

Alice smiled, “Chris is dear to me. He’s a good boy.”

“Oh yes, he is,” Edith nodded. “Now I just need the means to care for him.”

Alice responded: “I have something for you…”

Edith expected a job offer, but instead, Alice asked her to be like a mother to her.

“You’ve brought light into our lives,” Edith said tearfully. “You are truly an angel.”

“You don’t have to thank me,” Alice said. “Thanks to you, I now have a family—and that’s the greatest treasure.”
