The girl kept a python at home named Safran – for the sun spots on its scales. The girl got the yellow python three years ago and quickly became “pet”. Her relatives winced: “Be careful, it’s a predator.” But the girl only smiled: “She’s tame. She loves me and will never harm me.”
However, after some time, the snake began to behave strangely.
The first alarming oddities began unnoticed. Safran stopped eating. At night, it crawled out of the terrarium and stretched along the girl – head at the shoulder, tail at the ankles. Sometimes it wrapped itself around the waist in a loose loop and froze, as if counting ribs.
During the day, she chose the cool floor near the bed, where the girl walked barefoot, and lay for hours, barely moving the tip of her tail, and her gaze was fixed exactly where a person’s chest rises and falls.
Also – muffled “hugs”: the snake crawled up to her throat and lingered under her collarbone, touching the skin with its forked tongue. The girl joked that it was a kiss. But at night she woke up more and more often – from the weight on her chest.
And when one night she woke up from the sharp hiss of the snake, the girl realized that it was time to see a veterinarian. The doctor slowly weighed the python, performed a palpation, listened to stories about nighttime “cuddling” and refusal to eat.
“You see,” he finally said, “this is not affection. In large pythons, hunger strikes and stretching along the owner’s body are a typical complex before trying to swallow large prey. The snake is measuring whether the size is suitable. Wrapping around is a rehearsal for strangulation. You have an adult, strong female. She is enough to block your breathing.
