Suspicious Steps
One sunny afternoon, I was watering the plants on the balcony when I noticed something strange. My husband, Rodrigo, was coming up from the apartment below ours. He looked casual, like someone arriving home from work, carrying himself with the ease of a man in his own sanctuary. My heart skipped, but I told myself it was probably a friend or a neighbor.
Days later, I saw him again at the same time. This time, he carried a bag of food and wore an expression of joy and tenderness—emotions he hadn’t shown me in years. A gnawing suspicion began to eat at my heart.

The Shocking Discovery
Determined to know the truth, I approached the building guard. He hesitated, then confessed:
“Mr. Rodrigo visits 904 often… a young woman who has rented there for years lives there.”
My soul froze. 904 was right below our apartment. My chest tightened as if it would burst. For four years, had Rodrigo lived another life, a hidden life, while I walked above him, unaware of the betrayal lurking just beneath my feet?
Confrontation at the Door
That night, armed with the pretense of delivering a “wrong” package, I rang 904’s doorbell. A beautiful young woman opened the door, startled. Behind her, I saw him—Rodrigo—sitting on the sofa, familiar sandals on the floor, as if nothing had changed.
In that instant, my world shattered. Rodrigo stood, stammering:
“Isabel… let me explain…”
I stared him down, my voice trembling with controlled rage:
“Explain what? For four years, down here, you’ve lived this double life! Was I your legitimate wife, or just the shadow concealing your sins?”
Silence enveloped the apartment. The mistress bowed her head. Rodrigo sweated, unable to meet my gaze. In that moment, I knew our marriage was over. A betrayal of this magnitude was unforgivable.
Family Conspiracy
Returning home, I slammed the door as if cutting the last invisible chains. The phone rang endlessly that night, but I ignored it all.
The next morning, my mother-in-law, Doña Carmen, appeared, her expression stern:
“Do you really want to make a scene? All men have their indiscretions. Rodrigo loves you, he loves the children. He bought that apartment to keep things discreet. If you create a fuss, the whole family will look foolish.”
My throat tightened.
“So you knew all along?” I asked.
She looked away, murmuring:
“Four years ago. I advised him, but he didn’t listen. An intelligent woman knows when to close her eyes to protect her home.”
I laughed bitterly. Everyone had conspired to hide the truth from me—Rodrigo, my mother-in-law… everyone. I alone had lived blindly, right above that nest of infidelity.
The Final Blow
That night, Rodrigo knelt before me, begging:
“Forgive me. I’ll break up with her. I’ll sell that apartment. Think of the children, the family. Give me a chance.”
I looked into the eyes I had once trusted, and saw only an abyss of lies. Coldly, I replied:
“Don’t worry. I’ll set you free. But be prepared for court. I’ll fight for custody of my children and for our assets. You won’t get away that easily.”
My words struck like lightning, severing a rotten marriage at its roots. Rodrigo was petrified. Doña Carmen was speechless. They never imagined the docile woman they knew could rise up, strong and unyielding, to cut everything off at once.
