We were driving down a familiar road, the day calm and sunny. My dog dozed quietly on the passenger seat, lazily opening his eyes now and then, as if to check everything was fine.
Then suddenly everything changed. His ears perked up, his eyes filled with alarm — and in the next instant, he barked sharply.
But it wasn’t an ordinary bark. In his voice was a warning, urgent and desperate. He stared straight at the road ahead and wouldn’t stop, as if trying to save us from something unseen.
I reached out to calm him, said his name softly, but his barking only grew louder.
And then I looked ahead… 😱
Right in front of us yawned a massive gap — the bridge we always drove across had collapsed! Down below, among the wreckage, I could see overturned cars, smoke rising, and hear the cries of the trapped.
My heart dropped. I slammed the brakes; the tires screeched against the asphalt… and we stopped just a few feet from the edge.
For a moment, I just sat there, shaking, realizing one thing: if not for my dog, we would have been gone.
