The children and grandchildren couldn’t come for Grandma’s birthday, so I came up with a plan to save her party.

LIFE STORIES

I’ve been working in this café for several years, and I’ve become an integral part of it: here, each day feels like the one before, yet always brings something special.

In particular, I remembered a customer, around 65 years old, who came almost every day. Sometimes she ordered a snack; sometimes she just sat there with a cup of coffee in her hand, lost in thought.

No one knew her name, and somehow, she had become part of our little world.

That day, I started my second shift as usual at 2 p.m. I saw her—she was sitting alone at a large table in the corner. Something was off: she wasn’t sitting by the window, as she usually did, and her expression was so sad I understood immediately.

I walked over and greeted her.

— Hello, ma’am.

She looked up with tired eyes and replied softly:

— Hello.

Her sadness touched me deeply. I took a chance:

— Tell me, what’s wrong? You seem so sad today…

— It’s my birthday, she explained, and I’m all alone. I had invited my children and grandchildren… but no one came. They have their own concerns, their work… No one could make it.

My heart sank: on this important day for her, she was alone in this café.

— That must be very painful, I said gently.

She nodded and sighed, looking out the window.

I knew I couldn’t just stand there and do nothing. I had to act. An idea came to me:

— What if we did a little something for you? I offered. You’re one of our most loyal customers; let us honor you.

Her eyes lit up with a spark of interest mixed with skepticism:

— What do you mean?

I smiled:

— Today, consider that you have guests. My colleagues and I would be honored to share this moment with you.

I motioned to the staff to take a short break, and we began to set the large tray. We decorated it with flowers, added several pastries and drinks, then I invited her to sit.

Little by little, her face relaxed. She began to smile, and her gaze became brighter. When she tasted the first bite of cake, her eyes sparkled like a little girl’s.
