I allowed a homeless woman to live in my garage: the next day, I opened the garage door and was shocked.

LIFE STORIES

It was raining heavily outside. I was coming home from work when I noticed a poor woman. She was sitting on the sidewalk, arms wrapped around herself. I felt a lot of pity for her and decided to approach.

“Come to my place,” I said. “I have a garage. It’s warm in there. There’s a toilet and a bed.”

The woman looked at me strangely.

“In a garage?” she asked.

“It’s not as bad as it sounds,” I quickly added. “It’s temporary. Until you find a better solution.”

She agreed. I settled her on an old folding bed. I brought her a blanket, some food, and a spare kettle. When leaving, I closed the door to the main house—not out of fear, but out of habit.

The next day, I told my partner. She wasn’t thrilled. “You trust too much,” she said.

When I came home the following evening and opened the garage door, I was shocked. The unknown woman I had sheltered…

It was no longer a dark, dusty storage space, but a real living space. The old furniture was tidied, the floor cleaned, a knitted blanket laid on the bed.

A bouquet of dried herbs hung on the wall, like in a country home. The air smelled of mint and lavender. In one corner, a candle and some old photos. In those photos, I recognized my guest: young, with children, a man in uniform, a radiant smile.

I didn’t know what to say. I felt a mix of astonishment, gratitude, and a strange feeling of warmth.

“Sorry if I overdid it,” she said, coming out from behind an old wardrobe, holding a cup. “I don’t like disorder. Even when it’s not my home.”

“You… you did all this in one day?”

“I was bored,” she said with a smile. “And you gave me a roof. I wanted to thank you in my own way.”

I sat down on a chair. Silent. And I understood: I had never felt at home in that house… until she arrived. And brought order — not only outside, but inside too.
