“Mom told me to wait on the bench… And I didn’t see her again for years.”

LIFE STORIES

My name is Matteo. As a child, I thought our family was simple but strong. We lived modestly but warmly. My father worked in his workshop, and my mother stayed at home to take care of me. I was their only child, and I believed things would always stay the same.

But one day, everything changed. My father lost his job. I didn’t understand much at the time, but I could feel the joy was gone. He became silent, and my parents started arguing. At night, I would hear my mother shouting, slamming doors, and then… a silence more frightening than any words. Later, my father discovered my mother had another man. Our home was no longer a safe place. My father left. I missed him every minute. And my mother… she just said, “He left us. Forget him.” But I couldn’t.

One day, she woke up in a good mood – for the first time in a long while.
“Pack your things, we’re going to the sea,” she said. I was happy. I believed her. We got on a bus, and at one stop, she said, “Wait here. I’ll get you an ice cream.” I stayed on the bench… and I never saw her again.

Hours passed. It was cold. I called for her, I cried, but she never came back. Someone found me and contacted my father. He came – tears in his eyes. He told me, “Your mother abandoned you. She’s not coming back.” I couldn’t believe it. But it was the truth.

My father and I started a new life. A woman named Giulia entered our lives. She was kind and patient. At first, I kept my distance, but little by little, I started calling her “Mom” – because she was really there. When my little sister was born, I finally understood what a real family is.

Later, my father told me that my biological mother had called him the next morning, leaving only an address. Then she disappeared. The court removed her custody. No one ever heard from her again.

Years went by. I grew up, graduated, got a job, and bought my own apartment. My father and Giulia were always there for me.

One evening, I came home and saw a woman sitting on a bench outside my building. She looked up and whispered, “Matteo… I’m your mother.” I barely recognized her. She had aged, and her voice was unfamiliar.

I called my father. He came with Giulia. He said, “Son, now it’s your choice what happens next.”

I looked at her and felt nothing. Just emptiness.
“You’re not my mother,” I said. “You left. You abandoned me. I have a mother and a father – they’re here.” She cried, but I remained calm. I asked her to leave.

Then the three of us embraced tightly. I whispered, “Thank you for being there for me. I love you.”
And that was the truth.

Never abandon your children. They didn’t ask to be born. But they do need love. I, Matteo, know this – and I carry that truth in my heart every day.
