Two decades later, my husband knocked on my door again — the man who once turned my life upside down. His words shook me deeply. That unexpected encounter with the past felt like a thunderbolt.
We met at university, where everything felt like a fairytale. Our marriage was modest but happy, and the first years of our life together were full of joy and hope.
However, everything changed after our son was born. When he was not even one year old, my husband announced he was tired of family life and left, leaving me alone with a toddler and shattered dreams.
The first few months were especially tough. My parents supported me as best they could, but I realized it couldn’t last. I had to return to work earlier than planned to provide for my son and me.
Money was always tight, and support from my ex-husband was a lost hope. A few months after he left, I learned that he had emigrated abroad, and all trace of him vanished.
Over time, I learned to manage on my own. I had no more illusions about him coming back. My son, who became my whole world, was my rock. He grew into an intelligent and responsible boy.
As he grew older, he became my greatest pride: he got an excellent education, built his career, and started a family. Today, he lives abroad and runs his own business.
Even from a distance, he supports me and ensures I lack nothing.
But a few months ago, my peace was once again shaken. My ex-husband, like a shadow from the past, reappeared in my life. His words took my breath away: he was demanding a share of my apartment, arguing that we had a child together.
He looked defeated and exhausted, as if life had been harsh to him. Maybe it was illness or debt, but one thing was clear: he needed something and had remembered me.
“Let’s split everything fairly, or I’ll have to take legal action,” he said without any shame.
I looked at him, unable to identify what I was feeling: anger, pain, or pity. This man had once ruined my life, and now he was back to shake everything up again. I may feel compassion for him as a human being, but the memories of the past make me doubt that he deserves a second chance.
Now I’m faced with a choice: to act according to my conscience or defend the peace I’ve fought so hard to earn.
