During an ordinary walk in the forest, my eyes caught sight of something unusual: a small black creature lay in the grass.
It was almost entirely hidden in the shade and seemed part of the ground. At first glance it looked like an ordinary lizard, but something felt off: it barely moved, appeared emaciated, and was clearly injured.
I felt sorry leaving it to die there, so I gently picked it up and took it to the nearest veterinarian. There something unexpected happened. When the vet saw the creature, he stepped back sharply and his face went pale.
— Do not touch it under any circumstances! — was all he could say before placing the lizard in a sealed container.
It turned out not to be an ordinary lizard. The creature belonged to an extremely rare species on the brink of extinction.
Very few individuals remained, and they were kept under strict protection as part of a closed population-recovery program.
Somehow that specimen had escaped from the breeding center located near the forest. It had been declared missing.
Thanks to the discovery, specialists were able to return it to a safe environment and begin treatment.
An ordinary walk ended with unexpected involvement in saving a unique species. Although zoologists quickly learned of the incident, they asked for discretion: excessive attention could endanger this very rare species.
