My husband said he was leaving me for another woman: my unexpected reaction

LIFE STORIES

As usual, I came home from work in the evening. Normally, my husband is home at that time, but today he wasn’t. The children were at his mother’s, so I decided to take my time. I quietly prepared dinner, decided to relax and go to bed early, enjoying the calm and silence of the house.

I thought he’d come home late as always, but suddenly the phone rang. I looked at the screen: it was him. I answered, and he got straight to the point, no beating around the bush: “You’ve probably noticed I’ve been coming home later and later. I have another woman. Please, don’t make a scene.”

His words didn’t shock me. I replied calmly: “Honestly, I didn’t expect this from you. You know very well I have an important hair appointment tomorrow and you were supposed to watch the kids. Why not tell me tomorrow?”

He went silent, confused. He probably expected me to scream or cry, but instead, I chose to talk about more important things. “I just want to eat dinner. Do you know where the mayonnaise is?” I asked, without anger or bitterness.

He continued: “Don’t you want to know who she is? Why I left? Aren’t you worried? Don’t you want me to come back? Don’t you love me anymore?” I sighed and replied firmly: “I don’t care who she is or why you left. That’s your problem. Didn’t you bring any mayonnaise on the way?”

He answered, surprised: “What kind of woman are you? Your husband leaves and you ask for mayonnaise?” And I understood the conversation was over.

I felt no pain or disappointment. I only cared about the kids and the house. He can build a new life. For me, his leaving is not a loss, but a liberation. He left, and I stayed, keeping my inner peace and balance.
