The photos from the “Waiting for Baby” series are unlike most others. Patti, a 50-year-old woman, carried her son’s baby because his wife, Kayla, was unable to carry a pregnancy to term due to medical reasons.

Since their wedding in 2012, Kayla’s mother-in-law would often joke that the best surrogate isn’t a stranger — it’s family. At first, the couple didn’t take her seriously. But after several failed attempts at surrogacy, Kayla began to consider Patti’s offer more seriously.

“At first, I thought the doctors would think I was crazy,” Kayla recalls. “But then I did some research and discovered many cases where grandmothers carried their own grandchildren.”

After a thorough medical evaluation, doctors confirmed Patti could be their surrogate. The first IVF attempt in March 2017 failed, but two months later they tried again — and it worked.
Seven months later, Cross Allen Jones was born, on December 30.

“I’m just amazed at the miracle of what’s possible,” says Kayla. “Surrogacy is challenging, especially for Patti, but when you’re holding the baby in your arms, everything else fades away.”
