A mother’s instinct is rarely wrong. That was true for Lilly Munro, who at just 24 weeks pregnant, couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong with her unborn son, Lennox. Lilly and her partner, Brodie Moles, went to a hospital in Melbourne, Australia — and shortly after arrival, they were told something was seriously wrong. Immediate action was needed.

Doctors discovered Lennox had a severe heart defect and needed to be delivered right away.

At just 24 weeks, Lennox’s chances of survival were only around 50%. He weighed only 1.8 pounds (about 820 grams). To stabilize his body temperature, he was placed in a plastic bag — a common technique for extremely premature babies.

Seeing him connected to tubes and machines was heartbreaking for the new parents. Lennox spent 111 days in the hospital. Lilly quit her job to stay by his side, while Brodie cared for their three other children and the home.

In the end, it was all worth it. Thanks to the incredible doctors and nurses, who Lilly says “went above and beyond,” Lennox pulled through. He gained weight and is now around nine pounds. The whole family is overjoyed.
