It was a warm and calm afternoon, one of those days when you breathe deeply and simply enjoy the moment. I was outside, leaning against the truck, feeling the breeze in my hair, and I thought it would be nice to send a quick photo to my husband. Something simple, nothing special. The truck looked beautiful against the trees in the background, and I thought he would appreciate the scenery.
I took a photo, standing next to the truck, and sent it without thinking too much about it. It was just a moment, a way to share part of my day.
But when his reply came almost instantly, it wasn’t what I expected.
“Who’s that in the reflection?”
I blinked, confused. “Which reflection?” I wrote back, starting to feel a lump form in my stomach.
“The one in the rear window. There’s someone there,” he replied, his words more serious than I expected.
My heart started racing. I reopened the photo and zoomed in on the truck’s rear window, examining the reflection. At first, I thought he was mistaken, maybe just the sunlight or a distant tree reflecting. But the closer I looked, the more my stomach tightened. There was a figure, blurry but undeniably present, standing right behind me.
It wasn’t a clear image, but the outlines were pretty clear: a male figure with a hat casting a shadow over his face. The hat. My breath caught when I recognized that familiar shape. It looked exactly like the hat my ex-boyfriend always wore, the one he never left home without.
