Caitlyn, known in the neighborhood as a friendly stray dog, was not captured with good intentions; the person who taped her mouth clearly targeted her suffering, which sparked outrage among residents and animal rights activists.
The binding was done with incredible violence. Caitlyn’s tongue was trapped between her teeth, and when veterinarians finally removed the tape, her mouth immediately swelled, doubling in size. The tissue of her tongue and nose, which had been deprived of blood flow for too long, became partially necrotic. Veterinarians are concerned for her life, as these injuries could lead to severe complications. Seeing this cruelty, the ASPCA responded quickly in Charleston. They offered a $1,000 reward for information that could help identify the perpetrator. The perpetrator could face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for animal cruelty. Unfortunately, such cases are not unique. Just a few months earlier, another dog was found suffering inside a locked transport crate, abandoned at the edge of a field.
Fortunately, the community mobilized. On Tuesday, June 2nd, the North Charleston police arrested a 41-year-old suspect. While Caitlyn’s injuries are severe, veterinarians remain hopeful: thanks to intensive treatment, she may survive the abuse.
